Thanks to Dixie Thunder of Aiken County ABATE Handipets will be the recipient of proceeds from the annual Crippled Critter Pawker Run. If you are the Aiken County Area and would like to participate please see the flier below for more information. If you are not in the are and would like to help Handipets do two things this year…

First: RELOCATE…Yes, we are actively seeking funds for a down payment on a piece of rural land in the Aiken County South Carolina area to relocate our crippled critter sanctuary and right now we could use all the help we can get. We plan to be relocated within 6 months. If you would like to see some of the properties we are interested in as well as the type of area we are hoping to find you can check out our Land Search on Google Map

Second: We need of course to stock up on food and supplies before the cold of winter sets in. We have a paypal link in the side bar and we also have an Amazon wish list that includes all the things we typically need every month for our special family members. If you are interested in helping us save up to relocate I am raising funds through Microgiving.com for that so that those funds will be in a secure account until we are ready to make a deal and that point Microgiving will send a check to the right person. Look for Land To Grow On if you wish to help Handipets secure a few acres.

About this Project

I am a 35 yr old sigle mom w/ 3 young daughters. I also have unfortunately been diagnosed w/ severe psoriatic arthitis, depression, and anxiety.I recieve social security disability for my disease so my funds are severely limited. My Therapy cat Tobigo has recently become very ill w/ a bowel obstruction.I have been able to borrow from my family and a friend, $700 which covers the last few days of vet bills for exams, xrays, and testing.Unfortunately, my vet informed me that Tobi will need to see a veterinary specialist for an ultra sound and possible emergency surgery. I have exhausted all resources and my vet says the ultrasound alone will run around $400 and I have no idea what surgery will cost but I am sure it is more than the ultrasound. My daughters and I will be devastated if Tobi passes away due to our financial situation. Please Help Us Save Tobi’s Life.

About this Project

Hi there! My name is Cheryl, and I’m putting on this fundraiser to benefit my horse Brit. Britters has been a therapy horse in the Equest Special Riders program for 4 years now and she loves her work. Due to a series of unfortunate events she has been unable to help the kids and is now in need of a little love and support herself.
Brit developed ulcers and the medication is much more than myself or the program can afford. To top it off, she needs her teeth floated. It’s a routine procedure but on top of the ulcers…. We are desperate to help her and the kids truly miss her.
It will cost us $33.00 A DAY to give Brit the cure she needs. The vet estimates that it will take a month to fully heal her. Myself and everyone in the program is chipping in their own money to help, but we woefully short. Please help! Ulcers are painful for horses. The ulcers will not heal without the medication and we will have to consider euthanasia to end her pain.
Any and every little bit helps, and you’ll be helping Brit get back to her kids and the program. If you would like to learn more about what she does, visit: www.equestspecialriders.com. You can use the “share” buttons on my profile to spread the word!

About this Project

The International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros (ISPMB) is the oldest wild horse and burro organization in the United State. Along with our first president, Wild Horse Annie, we were instrumental in getting legislation passed in 1971 which protected wild horses and burros so future generations could enjoy seeing them in the wild.

Since 1971, wild horses and burros have lost nearly half of their areas where they once roamed and more than 19 million acres of land. In 1999, the ISPMB began the first and only wild horse conservation center in the United States where we manage four wild herds. We have spent eleven years studying the social behaviors of these unique animals and have extraordinary results to be published by the end of 2011.

Two herds no longer exist anywhere else in our country except on ISPMB’s ranch. Our studies will help protect wild horses on public lands. Your support in helping us sustain this conservation program and will allow us to continue our important studies. We have some of the first information on social behaviors of western herds.

Mogley is a 3 year Black Lab with a severely luxated hip and a growing septic infection possibility. This will be the last of Mogley’s road to recovery, as he has already had procedures for a head wound and other internal injuries.

Mogley and his partner escaped the care of their owners, and ran into traffic. Unfortunately, Mogley’s brother died due to his injuries. Mogley survived the hardest part, which was the head injury.

He now has one more hurdle to overcome, and hopefully keep his leg. His hip is severely luxated, and the vet is concerned that infection due to the massive injury may cause the dog to go septic. The vet is hopeful that he can save the leg, but the owners are only concerned with saving Mogley’s life.

The owners have already put over $7000 into Mogley’s care, and simply do not have the funds to overcome this last procedure.

We are reaching out to our Angels to help this young guy have a chance at a full life.

This is the letter Handipets received from Mogley’s Family

Dear Becky and Amy

Thank you so much for getting back to me. I do already have a vet, they are the Summit Veterinary Referral Center @253-983-1114. They already accept donations over the phone. I have an estimation done up by the vet which I can fax over this afternoon. My paypal email address is jamieinreallife@yahoo.com.

We adopted Mogley from the Tacoma Humane Society in October of 2010 right after my husband and I got back from Iraq. We adopted his little brother Bagheera a couple of months later from a rescue. After that our little family turned into a hiking family; going out almost every weekend to different trails all over Washington. Mogley LOVES it! Up until now we have been very happy. Mogley and Bagheera are like my children. Then on April 15th, somehow Mogley and another dog friend that was visiting broke the latch on the old wooden gate in our back yard and Mogley and Bagheera were hit by a car. Bagheera did not make it but Mogley was rushed to intensive care. He is a very strong guy and has survived a collapsed lung, lung contusions and severe head trauma. We have spent over $7,000.00 on his medical treatment and he is doing much better. He now needs hip surgery and possibly a leg amputation due to irreparable damages. Once he has this surgery he will need a few weeks of recovery and then will most likely move on to be a strong, happy and healthy 3 yr old guy. The surgery is estimated to be $4,500.00. Without the surgery he will die. We just don’t have any money left and without the surgery are faced with the decision of having our baby put down. We are reaching out for any kind of help.

Thank you so much for any kind of help you can provide!!!
Jamie

(we think) she’s only 7 years old and she has two herniated disks she needs surgery or she will have to be put down she’s in a lot of pain that were trying to manage with medication.

She has two Owners (we share her) the lady that gave her to me two years ago had to give her up because she works a lot and it wasn’t fair to princess, I don’t work a lot and have another elderly dog that adores her so she always has company.

A couple of days after she gave her to me she asked me if it would be ok to take her for a walk now and then everybody told me I was making a mistake letting her but I thought “why not” they love each other I knew she wouldn’t steal her back. I’m glad I went along we are good Friends now.

The Lady is my neighbor we both work as Caregivers so we don’t make a lot of money we have enough between both of us to pay for all of her regular vet care, she’s spade and current with her license and shots, she’s micro chipped but $5,000 for back surgery is out of our collective reach.

We love her very much she’s the smartest dog I’ve ever known, The Lady her name is Josephine comes to get her everyday for walks they enjoy their time together but Princess knows her home is here with me.

She was raised by a homeless couple and when the Man went to jail the Woman gave her to Josephine’s Daughter who gave her to her mom.

She had a black eye and was pregnant when Josephine got her, she had six adorable puppies and they all found homes fast.

I’m trying to not to get my hopes up but if a miracle doesn’t happen soon I will have to hold her down so the Vet can put her down because we can’t afford the surgery that will heal her.

I’m not sure how she got injured the vet said it could’ve been jumping from the couch. We tried the steroid routine and it helped for a while but it’s over now and she’s in a lot of pain.

I’m holding on hoping to find a way to save her life she’s a much loved member of two Families, Thank you. Barbara

P.S.

I can send the Vets diagnosis or whatever you need after they open tomorrow I will attach the invoice from her last appointment but it only shows the meds he prescribed and that I paid.

All of her Vet paperwork is in Josephine’s name I left it that way because she’s more stable than me my phone will get shut off from time to time I always get it back on but I’m afraid if something happened to Princess and they couldn’t find me, you know so we leave it in Josephines name in case it breaks my heart but there is just NO WAY we could come up with enough money for surgery.

My 5 year old Alaskan Malamute, Boom, was recently diagnosed with a large brain tumor. I am trying to raise money to help pay for her radiation treatment. I adopted Boom when she was two years old from a guy who didn’t take good care of her. He gave her beer and drugs for fun and left her outside most of the time. She was a little bit of work when I first brought her home; she had food and toy aggressions, and tried to assert herself as the Alpha. After a little love and training I managed to earn her trust and love. Ever since, she has been a wonderful companion. She kept me company on the long drive across the country when we moved from Washington, DC to California. Though she is 95 pounds, she is a total daddy’s girl and often tries to sleep curled up between my legs.

On February 6th, Boom started having seizures. On February 16th, after drugs weren’t working very well, I brought her in for an MRI. Sadly, it revealed a large tumor in her brain. She has been undergoing radiation therapy since March 2, which is the only possible successful treatment option with minimal drawbacks/side effects. She’s responding well to the radiation so far and has started to perk up a little bit and act more like herself.

Every single penny counts…really, that is what MicroGiving is all about, small change adding up to make big difference. Please don’t go away saying you can’t help…surely you have just a dollar? That would be one dollar more than there was in the collection a minute ago and later there would be a dollar more. Please consider just a single dollar and click this link: http://www.microgiving.com/profile/SterlingDWatts

This is a very unexpected cost, and one for which I don’t have all the money yet. It’s an expensive treatment, but worth it to keep my beautiful girl healthy longer. The radiation is going to cost around $6,764.00, and I am hoping to raise $8,564.00 to help with the expenses (radiation, drugs, and MRIs). I work as a server at Karl Strauss and I don’t have enough funds to pay for the treatment. I have taken out Care Credit (essentially a loan for vet bills), but am hoping to minimize some of the costs so I can afford it. Anything you can donate would be greatly appreciated.

For every donation of $25 or higher, you will receive a hand written thank you note and a Sears photocard, good for one free session at Sears Portrait Studio, an 8 x 8 portrait and two enhanced 5 x 5 portraits (valued at $54.99).

Donors who give $50 or more will also receive a “paw”tographed picture of Boom, her way of thanking you for your help.

Boom had a rough start to her life. I just want to make sure she has the best quality of life possible. Thank you for your generosity and support. It means so much to me.

Also, please use the “share buttons” on my page to spread the word to others. I will be keeping things updated on my Facebook page; please check it out and follow how Boom is doing!

Finnegan Monkeybear Bumblebee (or “Finn” for short) is an almost three-year-old dachshund. He is the happiest, bounciest, most loving little guy we’ve ever met… of course, we’re biased, but seriously; he’s a wonderful little guy with a great (and very not-dachshund-like) temperament.

Finn has recently been having painful “episodes” (for lack of a better word); at first we didn’t know if maybe he hurt his back, or if he was having seizures, but after a pricey trip to the neurologist, we found out that Finn has two ruptured discs — one in his back and one in his neck.

Finn has a chance of being able to live a long, happy, and pain-free life; but the best, quickest and easiest way to insure this is to have surgery to fix the ruptured discs.
Currently, Finn is on “strict rest,” which means he has to remain crated almost 24-hours a day for the next two weeks. The neurologist’s hope is that with very little activity (this means no bouncing, jumping, running, chasing his brother), his discs can at least start to heal. After this, we’ll have to basically re-train him: no more stairs, no jumping, no quick starts or stops.

The MRI necessary to proceed to surgery is $1800 alone. This is what we need money for initially. Should he need the surgery (which the neurologist said is very likely), we will use the rest of the money for it… it can cost anywhere from $4500-6000. Should some sort of miracle happen and Finn doesn’t need surgery, we’ll donate the money left over after Finn’s treatment to a Dachshund rescue, or if we have Finn’s Fund (details below) set up, we’ll contribute to that.

You may be wondering about pet insurance. We did too. Since IVDD (intervertebral disc disease) is common in dachshunds, insurance companies argue that this is a

congenital disease – therefore, it’s not covered. So, we’re on our own.

Not only is $6-8,000 a LOT of money; but we’re in the process of buying a house… so this is, to say the least, a very unexpected expense that we are not prepared for.
Anything you can donate would be so greatly appreciated. We’re working on starting a blog for Finn’s Fund and hope to eventually branch off into an organization that helps other weenies and their families in this same situation. You can see our rough draft (very rough) at www.FinnsFund.org
Thank you so much for your generosity and consideration. We really mean it from the bottom of our hearts.

Sincerely,
Nicole & Dan (and Finn… and Zulu, Finn’s four-legged big brother)

I am a 24 years old living in Northern Virginia. My parents were recently divorced, one parent was forced to move 5,000 miles away, while the other chooses to have nothing to do with me. So, one week after I graduated college I was forced to move out on my own. I stayed with friends for a few months until I got a job and finally rented my own apartment. Finally, I found a place to call home again. This new home was lonely, not like my previous home. So, being the animal lover I am, I rescued Toby. Toby is a Boxer mix, currently 2 1/2 years old. When his rescue organization found him, they doubted he would survive. He was found in a dumpster infested with fleas and ticks. Lucky for me they treated him and got him ready for adoption. Toby seems to have been abused, as he is very shy and docile, and especially timid around men. Toby is less than 3 years old, and a bundle of joy and love. He used to go everywhere with me, making everyone he meets smile once they catch a glimpse of his underbite! He is such a character!

Recently, Toby was at an off-leash dog park and blew out his cruciate ligament in his rear left leg. I found him limping back to me begging me to be carried. Toby was taken to the vet the very next day, where they advised me he would need surgery, not just for one leg, but that he had actually torn both of his cruciate ligaments in his hind legs. The cost of each surgery ranges from $3000 – $4000. Unable to afford this, I followed some advice from people in similar situations, and used a technique called “conservative management” which consisted of a strict diet and restricting Toby to his crate for the past few months in order to limit his physical activity. Furthermore, I have been carrying all 60+ pounds of him up and down my four flights of apartment stairs so that he may use the bathroom daily. Additionally, he has been taking a glucosamine/aspirin regimen and was starting to look a little better. Then, the other day I was giving Toby a bath. Eager to jump out of the tub, he missed the towel on the floor and slipped on the tile in the bathroom, reinjuring his knee. Now surgery is unavoidable. Not only is it out of my price range, living on my own and making just enough to make ends meet… now i have been hit with this unexpected expense which I will need to finance on my credit card, and probably ends up paying twice as much for the surgery before I ever pay it off! I will go into debt to take care of Toby, he is like my kid!

Your donation will be used to give Toby life through surgery. He is need of a dual tibial plateau surgery, each costing between $3000-$4000. The severity of his injury is causing degeneration in his knees, and will give to overall arthritis. His vet has advised me that if his condition continues untreated, the pain he experiences will eventually become intolerable, and he may need to be put to rest. Thank you for taking the time to read about our story.

Please spread the word using the “share” buttons on my profile.

My name is Pat McCaffrey and I am writing to ask if you could please help me with a problem that is really getting the best of me.
I have a service dog (Siberian Husky) named Sully who warns me prior to my seizures. Sadly, he has developed what the vet feels is Laryngeal Paralysis, and this has been stated an emergency. It’s an emergency because it affects his ability to breathe and swallow which has therefore led to Aspiration Pneumonia twice. I can’t afford the final diagnosis and what’s called the “Tie-Back” surgery that he needs to have. He is scheduled to be seen by Veterinary Specialists of Connecticut on Wednesday 12/22/10. The Mosby Foundation has already created a fund and is going to pay $500 but the total cost will be between $2300 and $2570, and that is why I’m pleading with groups like you.

I have had had Sully and his sister Kiki their entire life since I owned the mom…and this is killing me to not be able to continue the excellent service I’ve given them throughout their whole lives. I’ve had two brain tumors/surgeries and this has caused many side-effects. I’m on a limited income from Social Security Disability.

Thanks and God Bless, Pat

My husband and I live in Brooklyn, NY. Around 3 years ago, when we moved to our current apartment, we got involved in kitten rescue efforts. It all started with two sweet, but sickly kittens, who we found next to the house; a tuxedo we named Penguin (or Penny for short,) and a tabby we named Hercules. Although we knew nothing about kittens at the time, we immediately took them in, nursed them back to health, and made them part of our family. Since then we have rescued 11 kittens and 2 baby raccoons. Each of the kittens, barring the latest two who are still in our foster care, was adopted by loving and responsible families. With the help of a great network of people, the raccoons were transferred to a rural home, where they were rehabilitated to their natural environment.

Unfortunately, last week we had to take Penny to the emergency room, after he developed symptoms of acute anemia. When Penny was first examined at the Veterinary Emergency Group his blood count was a critically low 15 instead of normal 45. He required a blood transfusion and a number of tests to reveal the cause of his anemia. Fortunately, the incredible doctors at VERG South were quickly able to determine that the cause of Penny’s condition was Haemobartonellosis – a blood disease caused by bacteria (mycoplasia haemofolis). These bacteria attach themselves to the wall of red blood cells. Animal’s immune system tries to destroy these parasites but in the process also destroys the affected red blood cells, causing anemia. The doctors reported that Penny’s condition is critical and that without hospitalization and emergency treatment he will not survive. After 3 days of extensive care in the hospital Penny was discharged. We took him home and right now, although Penny will have to stay on medication for the next three weeks, he is on his way to a full recovery. We are extremely grateful to the hospital crew for saving Penny’s life.

The cost of Penny’s treatment turns out to be much more then what we’ve expected or can afford – $2300. Right now we are trying to raise this amount to cover the expenses so that we can continue our rescue efforts and help other cats and kittens in need.

We would greatly appreciate any contribution.
He is in a 1 year treatment program and has had 4 months [going on 5 months] of chemo and I need some help in paying the remainder of his treatments.

If I can get a few people to help instead of one person that may be easier.

He is doing exceptionally well on his chemo and the doctors are amazed. They even asked me to put him on a diet.

I am scared I will not be able to give him the treatments he needs — he has about enough to cover the next 4 treatments at best. Treatments vary by drug in costs and its been minimum cost treatments. He gets 4 types of drugs.

My veterinary can give you the details of his health and the costs, Dr. K. Oberthaler 212-767-0099 at NYC Veterinary Specialists

please he means so very much to me and I do not want the treatments to stop.

Any help is appreciated, I have exhausted almost every web site and link and time is getting short.

I borrowed from family and friends already for his hospitalization when he had an ultrasound [saw only 1 mass] colon-oscopy [they removed the mass successfully along with surrounding colon/tissue which was free of cancer as well.

I still owe people plus I am on a payment plan for the hospital bill still.
Money I know does not stretch that far and I have put my story on blogs, make a wish foundation, and another site and so far nothing.

He came to us in the fall of 2005 when he was just over a year old. He was an energetic and goofy, big baby who loved to run around in the yard for hours and hours, chasing after his football or playing tug-of-war with his rope toy.

We enjoyed each new day with Dusty until late January of 2007 when he started having problems walking. It began with a limp that we dismissed as a muscle strain because of his high level of activity. After 2 weeks of no improvement, we began to worry when he started to hold his left hind leg up. Then came the day that he yelped in pain and we knew that he had to be seen by the vet right away. We took him to the vet in late February of 2007 and our hearts were broken when they told us he tested “strong positive” for Lyme Disease. We had him treated right away with a strong dose of Doxycycline and he was given Deramax for pain management. After about a month of treatment we slowly tried to take him off of the pain medication and his limping returned. By the end of April we decided that we did not want to continue him on Deramax because of the side effects and more tests were needed to determine why he was still having pain with his left hind leg.
On the morning of April 23rd I cried when I left him at the vet for his x-ray that day. Later that evening when we picked him up, the vet explained to us that Dusty’s x-ray showed that he has Degenerative Joint Disease. They made the assumption that the Lyme Disease progressed the degeneration of his hip bone. The grinding of these bones was causing him the great deal of pain that he was experiencing and they recommended that we start him on Adequan. Dusty received his first Adequan shot that day, his next shot 4 days later, another shot 4 days from then and 3 more shots that were each 4 days later. After that, he received a series of 8 shots that were each between 3 weeks and a month apart. Although this was still a lot of vet visits, we were happy to see that some improvement had been made. From this point forward we have been able to schedule his shots approximately 2 months apart, totaling approximately 13 shots to date (November 2009).
This expense alone has put us in a very hard spot financially but we could never stop them because we know that without them, Dusty would not be able to walk around comfortably or play with us in the yard. Each shot is approximately $45, so we have easily spent over $1200 on just his shots, which does not include the office visits, tests, x-rays, etc. which have totaled well over $700. This of course is in addition to all the regular monthly expenses that any pet owner is well aware of (food, preventative meds, yearly exams, etc.)

In the fall of 2008 we noticed that Dusty had a lump on his foot. We visited the vet and went through all of the necessary tests and treatments to determine what was causing this. We spent approximately $600 for his office visits, x-ray, ointments, antibiotics, cytology tests, etc. The vet was unable to determine what was causing this and before we were able to have it surgically removed, the bump went away.

Then in November of 2009 we discovered a lump on Dusty’s side. The vet had a hard time feeling the lump but was concerned because it did feel hard to her. They did an aspiration and sent it to the lab. While checking him, the vet noticed a mole by his eye that just recently grew there, over the last year. She expressed to us that she was concerned because she did not like the color of the mole and she suggested that we have it removed. We agreed that we would schedule the surgery when we had the funds to do so and asked for them to send us a quote. After handing over our credit card to pay for the $150 bill, we went home to wait for the Cytology results.
The next day the vet called and told us that the results showed the cells to be fat but that she was not entirely confident that she was able to extract the cells directly from the lump, so she couldn’t be 100% certain. She explained to us that there was always the possibility that she missed the lump. Because of this and the fact that the lump did feel hard to her, she recommended that we have it removed when we have the mole on his eye removed, this way we could have both biopsied. The cost of this surgery was approximately $800 and thanks to some help from Handipets fans, we were able to pinch pennies and come up with the money that was required. Unfortunately though we hit a snag in the road and the surgery was not exactly uneventful as Dusty had some heavy bleeding and very deep bruising on his stomach. After numerous more visits, Dusty tested positive for von Willebrand’s disease (a bleeding disorder common in Dobermans).

Dusty’s recovery since then was successful and all has been going well until September 2010. Dusty started limping as he does from time to time, so we gave him his Adequan injection like we normally do when his hip seems to hurt. But after a week there was still no improvement and he was now beginning to hold his leg up. We called the vet and agreed to have an x-ray done so that we could see if there were any changes in the hip or anything else going on. The vet called after the x-ray to let us know that what was bothering Dusty was not even his hip…he has a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)! Right now he is being treated with his normal Adequan injections and joint supplements and we are giving him Deramaxx to help deal with the pain until surgery can be scheduled. We are also keeping him as still as possible since the pain medications don’t seem to be helping his mobility any. We scheduled Dusty for a consultant with an orthopedic surgeon and they are quoting surgery to be between $2,500 and $4,000 – depending on the type that is necessary once they open his knee up and see the extent of the damage. To make matters more complicated, Dusty’s surgery will be a delicate one, above and beyond the delicate nature of a typical knee surgery. He will need to be treated beforehand for his bleeding disorder and could require a blood transfusion, depending how his body handles the surgery. All of this of course adds to the already huge cost of a typical orthopedic surgery.

At this point we are desperately hoping to be able to schedule his surgery very, very soon. The longer we put off surgery, the longer he will shift his weight to compensate for the injury and this greatly increases his chances of tearing the other ACL, which would put him through unbearable pain. The vet already warned us that 50% of dogs that tear one, end up tearing the other and we are so scared that he will become part of this statistic if we don’t act fast.

The wonderful supporters of Handipets have helped us before and we are hoping that some of you could find it in your hearts to help us again. It pains us to see our happy boy limping around in pain and to see the discomfort in his eyes.
